Bringing the Henry Royce Institute to life: briefing and designing an adaptable research hub for the advancement of UK materials science

Time: 09:00 - 10:00

Date: On-Demand Content

Synopsis

Royce Chief Scientist, Regius Professor Philip Withers, together with the new building’s lead designer, Ingo Braun from international architecture firm NBBJ, will present the story of the building from conception to completion.

This case study will demonstrate how the design supports the endeavours of the Institute in accelerating the invention and take up of new materials systems to meet our most pressing global challenges, enhance industrial competitiveness, and shape the world around us.

The new Hub Building will act as a centre of scientific excellence for advanced materials and a meeting place for the national community. By bringing together the UK’s academic and industrial materials leaders, the Royce will identify new opportunities, workshop ideas, and develop new strategies and approaches to meet tomorrow’s materials demands.

By bringing industry and academia together under one roof, the goal is to facilitate collaboration and solidify the UK’s position as a world-leader for materials science and engineering.

Professor Withers will showcase some of the research areas the Institute covers. Ingo Braun will present the approach taken by the whole team to designing for a developing brief and the ‘science on show’ approach which was developed, and includes laboratories revealing their complex workings to those on the outside, alongside spaces for visitor engagement and imaginative displays of research material and products.

The new Royce hub promises to secure the UK’s place as the global home of advanced materials research.

Speakers: Professor Philip Withers, Chief Scientist, Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials & Ingo Braun, Principal, nbbj
